Cauda Equina Syndrome
A rare but serious condition requiring emergency surgery to prevent permanent damage

Overview
Cauda equina syndrome is a rare but serious condition that occurs when the bundle of nerves at the base of the spinal cord (cauda equina) is compressed. This is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent damage, including paralysis and loss of bladder/bowel control.
Symptoms
- Severe lower back pain
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Saddle anesthesia (numbness in groin/buttocks)
- Weakness in both legs
- Sexual dysfunction
Causes
- Large herniated disc
- Spinal stenosis
- Spinal tumors
- Spinal infections or abscesses
- Trauma to the lower spine
Diagnosis
- Emergency clinical evaluation
- Urgent MRI scan
- CT scan
- Post-void residual bladder volume test
Treatment
- Emergency surgical decompression (within 24-48 hours)
- Post-operative rehabilitation
- Bladder training
- Physical therapy
Recovery & Prognosis
Recovery depends heavily on how quickly surgery is performed. Early surgery (within 24-48 hours) offers the best chance of recovery. Some patients may have permanent deficits.
